Drinking water supply

In 2001, the City of La Malbaie undertook to upgrade its various sources of drinking water to meet new standards. It launched a 23.5 million dollar project to provide the subscribers to the City’s waterworks system with very high quality drinking water.

The project began with finding and developing 5 artesian wells to supply the Pointe-au-Pic waterworks system. The wells are capable of producing up to 200,000 litres of water per day. The Sources Joyeuses system, which supplies the chemin du Golf, des Falaises, Mailloux sectors as well as a portion of the Kane sector, was brought up to the new standards for water quality. It was necessary to develop three artesian wells which will bring production capacity up to 140,000 litres of water per day (by the summer of 2005).

Work is currently underway in the Kane (old La Mabaie) sector. This system, which supplies roughly 2,500 subscribers, required the development of 2 artesian wells which will go online as of this summer and will produce up to 150,000 litres of drinking water per day.

The Rivière-Malbaie and Cap-à-l'Aigle waterworks systems will be supplied by an artesian well developed in the territory of the City of Clermont. Ten (10) kilometres of pipeline were required to furnish the high quality water from the well which will produce up to 300,000 litres per day.

The Saint-Fidèle and Sainte-Agnès systems already met the new water quality standards. However, a new well was developed to ensure a sufficient quantity and quality of water for the Saint-Fidèle sector as well as meet the supply needs of the fire department.

Finally, to better manage this natural resource, a control centre connected to all the pumping stations was installed to enable us to monitor water flows from the different wells as well as keep track of other parameters that ensure the security of the facilities. Because drinking water is precious, special constables will begin patrolling the streets of the City in the spring of 2005 with the mandate to enforce the regulation on watering and on using water from the municipal waterworks system.
