WASTEWATER PURIFICATION: AN IMPORTANT MISSION

By virtue of its size, the St. Lawrence River plays an essential role in Québec’s economic, recreational and tourist activities and the Charlevoix region is striking evidence of that role. Ensuring the purity of the household and industrial wastewater that is emptied into the River is therefore a major technical challenge.

The La Malbaie wastewater treatment plant is a collective achievement, and the responsibility for ensuring its financial and administrative soundness lies with the City. The plant’s mission is to protect the environment and contribute to enhancing the quality of the water in the St. Lawrence River.

Cooperation between the government and the municipalities

1988 to 1996: preliminary studies

1996: signing of memorandums of understanding between the Government of Québec and the four municipalities of the day: Cap-à-l'Aigle, La Malbaie, Pointe-au-Pic and
Rivière-Malbaie.

1996 to 1998: preparation of plans and estimates, installation of an interception network, construction of 12 pumping stations and the wastewater treatment plant.

1998: commissioning of the plant which marked the completion of the work on the water treatment system.
