The town of La Malbaie was founded on 18 March 1896. Special superintendent Simon Cimon was tasked with taking the first survey of the built-up territory. It was at that time that an area of approximately 783 acres was removed from the territory of the municipality of Saint-Étienne de La Malbaie. To be established as a town, the requirement was at least 40 inhabited houses and a total area of no more than 60 acres.

The Municipality of Rivière-Malbaie was separated from the municipality of the parish of St-Etienne de La Malbaie on 12 January 1935.

The municipality of Saint-Fidèle de Mont Murray was founded in 1855, five years after the canonical erection of the parish. At that time it included the communities of Saint-Raphaël de Cap-à-l'Aigle, Saint-Siméon and Saint-Firmin de Baie-Sainte-Catherine. The town of La Malbaie acquired its city status on 23 January 1958. The requirement was that the total population be a minimum of 2 000 inhabitants. The municipality of Pointe-au-Pic was created on 28 December 1876, and its population exceeded 400 inhabitants. The territory was removed from the parish of Saint-Étienne de La Malbaie.
